GRANT APPLICATION QUESTIONS

Who can receive individual grants from KEATCA?

Anyone studying or planning to study in a post-secondary public educational institution in Canada and meets the selection criteria can apply for grants. People studying outside of Canada can receive funding only if sponsored through a registered Canadian charitable organization (partner organization).

Do you have to be a permanent resident or citizen of Canada to receive grants?

No, you do not have to be a permanent resident or citizen of Canada to receive grants. Foreign students are equally eligible if they meet the individual criteria. We do not assist students in getting student visas for getting an education in Canada. Foreign students are responsible to ensure their entry into Canada to receive grants.

Can a KEATCA grant work in addition to student loans?

Yes, KEATCA grants can work with student loans. Our future recipients should come out of school without excessive financial burden. It's a contribution to a person's education so that they may continue with their education with the help of the community.

Must KEATCA grants be returned?

No, KEATCA provides grants, not loans. No one is required to reimburse any money received. We hope, however, that recipients will, when possible, become contributors towards the improvement of the lives of their families, friends, and the larger community.

Can KEATCA pay for expenses other than fees (e.g. textbooks, living expenses)?

Individual grants must be deposited directly to Canadian post-secondary institutions; consequently, KEATCA will not cover costs of textbooks or living expenses. Grants through Canadian Partner Organizations have flexibility and we can discuss this with the sponsoring partner organizations.

ENDOWMENT FUND MODEL QUESTIONS

What is an endowment fund?

KEATCA uses an endowment fund model to provide grants. An endowment fund is like a pot of money in which the investment income earned from the fund every year provides funding for grants. This means, that every dollar raised remains in the fund and contributes to growing the pot, allowing for the continuation of grants. The larger the pot, the greater potential for available grant funding.

How much of the investment income is used for grants?

99% of investment income is used for funding grants. One percent of the fund is paid annually to the Vancity Community Foundation for administration of the fund. The Vancity Community Foundation receives the funds, issues charitable receipts, invests the funds, produces reports, and ensures that funds are disbursed to legitimate registered Canadian charities only.
